SmackDown Kansas City Match Previews

Cody Rhodes vs Gunther — Undisputed WWE Championship (Sami Zayn As Referee, Commercial Free)

The headline match and the most anticipated SmackDown main event in years. Rhodes retained over Gunther at Clash in Italy on May 31 — but the finish was controversial after referee Dan Engler missed Gunther’s feet under the ropes during the deciding pinfall. SmackDown GM Nick Aldis granted Gunther a rematch, and Gunther’s stipulation was revealed on SmackDown June 12: he picks the referee.

Gunther chose Sami Zayn — a man with complicated history with both champion and challenger. Zayn refused to help Rhodes against Gunther’s attacks on SmackDown Barcelona and has been in a downward spiral since WrestleMania. Whether Zayn calls it fairly, favours Gunther, or turns on both men is the biggest wild card in WWE heading into tonight. The match airs without commercial interruption — the first commercial-free championship match on SmackDown in 2026.

Jey Uso vs Je’Von Evans — King Of The Ring Semi-Final

The final King of the Ring semi-final with a spot in the Night of Champions final against Oba Femi on the line. Jey’s path has been complicated — Solo Sikoa helped him win the first round with a Samoan Spike on LA Knight, raising questions about whose side Solo is really on. On Raw June 15, Roman Reigns gave Jacob Fatu an Ula Fala while Jey watched uneasily. Winning King of the Ring and challenging a world champion at SummerSlam would complete Jey’s evolution from tag team specialist to main event singles star.

Evans — an NXT call-up who only advanced because The Vision attacked Rollins — rejected Logan Paul’s Vision recruitment on Raw June 15. The young high-flyer faces the biggest match of his career tonight.

Charlotte Flair vs Liv Morgan — Queen Of The Ring Semi-Final

The most anticipated women’s match of the tournament. Women’s World Champion Morgan enters holding the title the Queen of the Ring winner is supposed to challenge for — creating an unprecedented scenario. If Morgan wins, she faces IYO SKY in a final where the championship match prize is redundant. If Flair wins, the 14-time world champion faces SKY with a SummerSlam title shot on the line.

Flair has been on a tear — submitting Valkyria with the Figure Eight on SmackDown June 12 and defeating Roxanne Perez on Raw June 15. Morgan has Judgment Day’s numbers advantage. This is the rubber match of one of the defining women’s rivalries of the last five years.

Carmelo Hayes vs Ricky Saints — US Championship #1 Contender Match

The winner faces Trick Williams for the United States Championship at Night of Champions on June 27. Hayes and Saints fought to a double count out on SmackDown Barcelona — tonight, there must be a winner. Hayes has been calling for the US title since SmackDown May 15 when he defeated Saints and declared his intentions. Williams entered the King of the Ring tournament but was eliminated in the first round — the US Championship is now his sole focus.

Damian Priest & R-Truth (c) vs MFTs (Tama Tonga & Talla Tonga) — WWE Tag Team Championship

The tag title match that has been building since April finally gets its PLE-quality stage. MFT have defeated Priest in multiple non-title matches, and Solo Sikoa’s interference has been the difference-maker every time. Royce Keys could factor in as a wild card — he’s been Priest’s unofficial partner when Truth isn’t medically cleared.

What’s At Stake Tonight — Night Of Champions Implications

Every match on tonight’s card directly shapes the Night of Champions lineup on June 27:

Rhodes vs Gunther → If Gunther wins, the Undisputed WWE Championship changes hands eight days before Night of Champions. If Rhodes retains, Gunther’s rematch clause is likely exhausted.

Jey vs Evans → The winner faces Oba Femi in the King of the Ring final at Night of Champions. The winner also earns a world title match at SummerSlam.

Flair vs Morgan → The winner faces IYO SKY in the Queen of the Ring final at Night of Champions. The winner earns a Women’s World Championship match at SummerSlam.

Hayes vs Saints → The winner faces Trick Williams for the US Championship at Night of Champions.

Tag titles → A potential Night of Champions defence if MFT wins tonight, or a rematch if Priest and Truth retain controversially.
