NOT at Backlash: Cody Rhodes vs Gunther for the Undisputed WWE Championship was confirmed on the go-home SmackDown May 8 for Clash in Italy in Turin instead. Paul Heyman brokered the contract on Gunther’s behalf. Both Rhodes and Gunther are expected to appear at Backlash — the unsigned contract still needs Gunther’s signature, and Rhodes may confront Gunther in Tampa to secure it. Expect a segment rather than a match.

Roman Reigns (c) vs Jacob Fatu — World Heavyweight Championship
The main event of WWE Backlash 2026 and the biggest Bloodline family championship match since Reigns’ historic Universal Championship run. Reigns won the World Heavyweight Championship from CM Punk at WrestleMania 42 Night 2, and Fatu challenged him on the Raw After WrestleMania.
Over the past four weeks, Fatu has stood tall over Reigns on every single show. He defeated Solo Sikoa and destroyed MFT on SmackDown April 24. He attacked Reigns with the Tongan Death Grip on Raw April 27 before Reigns accepted the challenge. He destroyed MFT again on SmackDown May 1. He slammed Reigns through the contract signing table on Raw May 4. And on the go-home SmackDown May 8, Fatu delivered the most emotional promo of his career — telling The Usos that if they interfere at Backlash, he’ll “burn the whole family tree down.”
Reigns has not stood tall over the challenger on a single show since accepting the match. The Usos’ allegiance remains the key variable — Jimmy admitted he’s partly rooting for Fatu, while Jey warned that Reigns will break Fatu down emotionally and physically. Fatu told both of them to stay away.
Seth Rollins vs Bron Breakker (First Hour — ESPN2)
WWE confirmed that the Rollins-Breakker match will take place during the first hour of Backlash, simulcast on ESPN2. Breakker returned from hernia surgery at WrestleMania to cost Rollins his match against Gunther. Their feud escalated on Raw May 4 when Breakker ambushed Rollins twice — pressing him overhead onto the barricade during the opening and later spearing him during a brawl involving The Street Profits, Logan Paul, and Austin Theory. Rollins’ physical condition heading into Tampa is a genuine question mark after two brutal attacks.
Trick Williams (c) vs Sami Zayn vs Carmelo Hayes — United States Championship (Triple Threat)
Originally a WrestleMania 42 rematch between Williams and Zayn, the match became a triple threat on the go-home SmackDown when Carmelo Hayes attacked Williams during the Gingerbread Man funeral and declared himself the third participant. Williams captured the US title from Zayn at WrestleMania with Lil Yachty in his corner. Since losing the title, Zayn has embraced a darker persona — attacking Lil Yachty, massacring the Gingerbread Man, and generally unravelling. Hayes’ addition adds an unpredictable element and a potential transitional champion to the equation.
Asuka vs IYO SKY
The match originally planned for WrestleMania 42 before being pulled from the card. On Raw May 4, Asuka sprayed IYO SKY with the poison blue mist during a pre-taped sit-down interview, ending the segment in the most brutal way possible. Their feud lost Kairi Sane to WWE’s post-WrestleMania releases, ending the original three-way rivalry — though the Wrestling Observer reported that many within WWE expected Sane to return at Backlash to wrap up her storyline.
Danhausen & Mystery Partner vs The Miz & Kit Wilson
Danhausen’s mystery tag partner is the single most speculated question heading into Backlash. On the go-home SmackDown, The Miz and Kit Wilson mocked Danhausen for being “toxic” and having no friends. Wilson held a mirror in front of Danhausen and said the only person crazy enough to team with him is himself. Danhausen looked at his reflection, said “that’s a great idea,” and zoomed away — leaving the mystery completely unsolved.
John Cena is confirmed to appear and shared a memorable WrestleMania segment with Danhausen. Cena competing seems unlikely given his December 2025 retirement, but the mystery reveal is one of the most anticipated moments of the night.
