The WWE SmackDown results from May 8 2026 saw the Undisputed WWE Championship picture take a shocking turn — Cody Rhodes vs Gunther will NOT happen at Backlash but instead at Clash in Italy, as revealed through a Paul Heyman-brokered contract. Rhea Ripley’s team dominated Fatal Influence, Tiffany Stratton retained the Women’s US title, Talla Tonga destroyed Damian Priest, and Jacob Fatu delivered the most emotional promo of his WWE career to close the Backlash go-home Friday Night SmackDown from Jacksonville.

SmackDown May 8 2026: Full Segment-By-Segment Breakdown
Ted Turner Tribute
SmackDown opened with an In Memoriam graphic honouring Ted Turner, who passed away this week. Turner founded TBS and TNT, networks that were home to WCW and are now home to AEW.
Jacob Fatu Opens SmackDown — “I’m Taking That Title”
Fatu opened with a commanding promo declaring he is not fighting Roman Reigns at Backlash for the World Heavyweight Championship — he is taking it. Fatu said since they were young, everyone saw the future in Roman, while they saw nothing in him. He said everyone reaching out now — trying to get him to fall back, fall in line — is not trying to protect him, they’re trying to protect Roman. Fatu closed with: “When Roman was born, he was born with opportunity. When I was born, I was born with nothing but hunger.”

Paige & Brie Bella Promo — Fatal Influence Confrontation
The Women’s Tag Team Champions addressed the Jacksonville crowd, with Paige declaring they are not a nostalgia act but the best they’ve ever been. Paige challenged anyone from Raw or SmackDown to step up, prompting Fatal Influence to appear. The confrontation set the stage for the six-woman tag later in the night and positioned Fatal Influence as the next tag title challengers.
Ricky Saints def. Matt Cardona
Ricky Saints picked up his second SmackDown win in as many weeks, defeating Matt Cardona in a competitive match. Cardona controlled early with a Broski Boot, but Saints escaped an Unprettier and connected with his signature Cross-Rhodes DDT variation. Cardona kicked out and hit a Rough Ryder, but Saints kicked out before finishing Cardona off for the pinfall. Saints continues to build momentum as one of the NXT call ups reshaping SmackDown.
Tiffany Stratton (c) def. Kiana James — Women’s United States Championship Retained
Stratton successfully defended the Women’s United States Championship in her first title defence since winning it from Giulia. James brought fight — connecting with a modified Death Valley Driver for a near-fall — but Giulia’s ringside interference backfired. James attempted a roll-up while Giulia distracted the referee, but Stratton kicked out, knocked Giulia off the apron, and hit a rolling senton followed by the Prettiest Moonsault Ever for the pin. After the match, Giulia and James appeared to be on different pages — a potential split brewing within the alliance.

Gingerbread Man Funeral — Carmelo Hayes Added To Backlash US Title Match
The segment opened with a video package superimposing the Gingerbread Man into iconic WWE moments from history. United States Champion Trick Williams hosted the funeral in the ring with a casket. Williams delivered a eulogy before Sami Zayn interrupted, mocking the ceremony. Williams attacked Zayn, but Carmelo Hayes then appeared and attacked Williams from behind. Hayes declared himself the third man in the US Championship match at Backlash — confirming the triple threat format: Trick Williams vs Sami Zayn vs Carmelo Hayes for the United States Championship at Backlash tomorrow.
Talla Tonga def. Damian Priest — MFT Dominance, Royce Keys Saves
Talla Tonga scored a significant singles victory over Damian Priest, one half of the WWE Tag Team Champions. Solo Sikoa was at ringside and distracted Priest at a key moment. R-Truth attempted to intervene but nearly took a Samoan Spike before Priest made the save, inadvertently allowing Talla to hit a chokeslam for the pin. Post-match, MFT surrounded Priest and Truth until Royce Keys stormed out to even the odds, backing Sikoa and the Tongas down.
Danhausen Mystery Partner Tease — “That’s A Great Idea”
The Miz and Kit Wilson found Danhausen backstage searching for a tag team partner for Backlash. Wilson called Danhausen “toxic” and Miz said he has no friends. Wilson held a mirror in front of Danhausen and said the only person crazy enough to team with him is himself. Danhausen looked at his reflection, said “that’s a great idea,” and zoomed away. The mystery partner remains unknown heading into Backlash — with John Cena confirmed to appear, speculation continues that Cena could be the reveal.
Fatal Influence def. Rhea Ripley, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss
The babyface trio dominated Fatal Influence in the six-woman tag. Ripley was the clear standout, ragdolling Jayne and Henley throughout the match. It later saw Ripley hit Jayne with the Riptide for the clean pinfall. Post-match, Ripley stared down Jayne, making it clear the Women’s Championship is next. Jayne went on to pin Bliss and win it for the Fatal Influence. While no official Backlash match was announced during the broadcast, the direction is unmistakable — Ripley vs Jayne for the WWE Women’s Championship at a future event, likely Backlash or the upcoming Clash in Italy.
Cody Rhodes vs Gunther — Confirmed For Clash In Italy, NOT Backlash
The biggest reveal of the night. Gunther was backstage with Nick Aldis preparing to sign a contract when Cody Rhodes’ music hit and the champion walked to the ring. Paul Heyman emerged instead of Gunther, holding a contract. Heyman explained he owed Gunther a favour — and the favour was brokering a title match, but not for Backlash and not even for the United States. The contract was for Cody Rhodes vs Gunther for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy in Turin.

Rhodes asked Heyman if he had become Gunther’s advocate, pointing out that Brock Lesnar retired on him, Roman wants nothing to do with him, and CM Punk discarded him. Rhodes questioned whether Heyman was running out of options. Heyman responded: “I’m not the one running out of options.” Heyman handed Rhodes the contract and said if Rhodes wants Gunther’s signature, he’ll have to get it himself. The segment ended with Rhodes holding the unsigned contract — setting up a confrontation with Gunther at Backlash tomorrow where both men sign, leading to their title match at Clash in Italy.
The Usos and Jacob Fatu — “I’ll Burn The Whole Family Tree Down”
The closing segment of the go-home SmackDown was the most emotionally charged Fatu promo yet. Jimmy Uso told Fatu they’re proud of him main-eventing Backlash but asked what happens if he loses. Jey warned that Reigns would break Fatu down — emotionally and physically — right in front of his family. Jimmy reminded Fatu that if he loses, his wife and children will have to acknowledge Reigns as the Tribal Chief.
Fatu’s response was devastating. He told The Usos he isn’t losing and he can’t lose. He reminded Jey that Jey has never beaten Reigns in a singles match. He said this is for his family — his wife and kids will watch him become the champion tomorrow. Then the warning: if The Usos even think of interfering at Backlash, “I’ll burn the whole family tree down.”
SmackDown ended with Fatu walking away from The Usos, a man choosing his family over the family — heading into the biggest match of his career completely alone.
