WWE Backlash 2026 Results: Full Match-By-Match Breakdown
Bron Breakker def. Seth Rollins — ESPN2 Opening Hour
The night opened with the most physical match of the entire card. Breakker and Rollins brought the intensity from the opening bell, with Breakker targeting the back that he damaged during his ambush attacks on Raw May 4. Rollins fought through the pain with a superkick, a Falcon Arrow, and a springboard knee — but Breakker absorbed everything.
The finish came after a devastating sequence. Breakker caught Rollins mid-air during a crossbody attempt and slammed him with a powerslam. He followed with two spears — the second connecting flush — for the decisive pinfall. This was Breakker’s biggest singles victory in WWE and cements him as a legitimate main event star. Rollins has now lost consecutive PLE matches (Gunther at WrestleMania, Breakker at Backlash), raising questions about where his character goes from here.

Trick Williams (c) def. Sami Zayn — United States Championship Retained
The WrestleMania rematch delivered at a higher level than the original. Zayn entered to a chorus of boos from the Tampa crowd, fully embracing his darker heel persona. The crowd taunted Zayn throughout, which only fuelled his aggression.
Zayn dominated early, targeting Williams’ neck with a brainbuster and working methodically. Williams mounted a comeback with Lil Yachty providing encouragement from ringside — but Zayn attacked Yachty again, sending him into the barricade. Williams exploded with rage, connecting with a running uppercut and a suplex before Zayn countered into the Blue Thunder Bomb for a near-fall.
The finish saw Williams catch Zayn with the Trick Shot out of nowhere for the clean pinfall. Williams’ reign continues, and with Carmelo Hayes surprisingly absent from the match (the triple threat was reduced to a singles bout), the US Championship picture remains wide open. Zayn’s post-match reaction — sitting in the ring in disbelief while the crowd mocked him — suggests his downward spiral is far from over.
John Cena Announces “The John Cena Classic” — New Championship Created
John Cena emerged in a blue-and-white pinstripe suit — matching the Tampa Bay Lightning’s home arena colours — to deliver the “history-making announcement” that had been teased for weeks. The Tampa crowd immediately began chanting “one more match,” but Cena clarified that he is “happy” with how his final match ended and put over the next generation — specifically naming Sol Ruca, Je’Von Evans, and Oba Femi.
Cena then announced “The John Cena Classic” — a brand new event pitting WWE superstars against NXT superstars. A new championship will be created specifically for this event, and Cena revealed that fans will decide who wins the championship through voting. Cena promised to make the event “excellent” and positioned himself as its figurehead ambassador.
The John Cena Classic is a significant addition to WWE’s event calendar — a cross-brand competition that gives NXT talent main roster exposure while leveraging Cena’s mainstream appeal. No date or venue has been announced. For more on Cena’s Backlash role, see our John Cena Backlash appearance breakdown.
IYO SKY def. Asuka — Kairi Sane Returns Post-Match
The match that exceeded every expectation. SKY and Asuka delivered a crisp, emotionally charged contest that told a compelling story even without Kairi Sane — though Sane ultimately did appear.
The Tampa crowd chanted “We Want Kairi” throughout the match, as they have at every show since Sane’s release after WrestleMania. SKY and Asuka exchanged release German suplexes and stiff strikes before SKY built momentum with the Bullet Train Attack. Asuka attempted the poison mist, but SKY dodged it and connected with the Over the Moonsault for the pinfall victory.
The real story came after the match. Kairi Sane’s music hit. The former Kabuki Warriors member — released from WWE just two weeks ago — walked to the ring to a thunderous ovation. Sane embraced SKY, and then turned to Asuka. In a rare moment of vulnerability, Asuka broke character, tears forming in her eyes, and the three women — the original Kabuki Warriors and their ally — shared an emotional group embrace in the ring. The Tampa crowd gave them a standing ovation.
Yahoo Sports described it as “a wonderful moment, capping off a great story that overcame Sane’s unexpected departure a few weeks ago.” The embrace appeared to be a farewell for Asuka, who may be stepping away from WWE for an extended period. Sane’s return — even if temporary — gave the storyline the closure it deserved after her abrupt release threatened to leave it unfinished.

Danhausen & Minihausen def. The Miz & Kit Wilson — Mystery Partner Revealed
The most entertaining segment of the night. Danhausen’s mystery tag partner was revealed as Minihausen — a miniature version of Danhausen played by El Torito, the former WWE personality known for his run with Los Matadores. Minihausen wore identical Danhausen face paint and entered to Danhausen’s music, sending the Tampa crowd into hysterics.
The match itself was pure comedy gold. Minihausen bit Wilson’s ankle, ran between Miz’s legs, and delivered a hurricanrana that Wilson sold spectacularly. Danhausen and Minihausen worked double-team moves including a tandem curse that triggered pyro and spooked both opponents. The finish saw Danhausen hit The Miz with a German suplex while Minihausen pinned Wilson after a top-rope crossbody — the smallest man on the card getting the biggest pop of the match.
Post-match, Danhausen and Minihausen celebrated by cursing the entire front row and dancing with the Tampa crowd. It was a perfectly placed palette cleanser between the emotional Asuka-SKY match and the main event.
Roman Reigns (c) def. Jacob Fatu — World Heavyweight Championship Retained (18:02)
The main event lived up to the four weeks of extraordinary build. Reigns and Fatu fought for over 18 minutes in the most physically intense match of Reigns’ current title reign — a contest that Yahoo Sports said “may not have been on quite the same level as Reigns’ match against CM Punk at WrestleMania 42, but man was it close.”
Fatu came out aggressive, charging Reigns with running hip attacks and a Samoan Drop in the opening minutes. Reigns weathered the storm and began targeting Fatu’s midsection with calculated strikes. Fatu responded with the Tongan Death Grip — the hold that had laid Reigns out on three consecutive shows — and Reigns sold it like death, nearly passing out before fighting to the ropes.

The closing stretch was extraordinary. Fatu hit a suicide dive and a top-rope splash for a near-fall that had the Tampa crowd believing the title would change hands. Reigns kicked out, fought to his feet, and the two exchanged superkicks in the centre of the ring. Fatu attempted a second Moonsault but Reigns rolled away. Reigns then connected with two consecutive Spears — the second of which left Fatu foaming from the mouth — for the pinfall victory.
After the match, Reigns offered Fatu a handshake. Fatu looked at it, then at The Usos at ringside, and walked away without acknowledging Reigns — refusing to accept the Tribal Chief’s authority even in defeat. Zilla Fatu — Jacob’s younger brother — appeared in the front row during the match, a tease that the Fatu family’s WWE story is far from over.
WWE Backlash 2026: Biggest Moments And Surprises
Kairi Sane returns — Released from WWE just two weeks ago, Sane appeared after the SKY-Asuka match for an emotional reunion and embrace. Whether this is a permanent return or a one-night farewell remains unclear.
Minihausen revealed — El Torito as Danhausen’s miniature tag partner was the comedy highlight of the night and one of the loudest pops of the entire show.
The John Cena Classic announced — A new cross-brand event pitting WWE vs NXT with a fan-voted championship. No date announced but Cena positioned himself as the permanent ambassador.
Zilla Fatu in the front row — Jacob Fatu’s younger brother was shown during the main event, planting seeds for a future Fatu family storyline.
Asuka’s possible farewell — Her emotional embrace with SKY and Sane post-match, breaking character after months as a heel, strongly suggested this may be Asuka’s final WWE appearance for some time.
Fatu foaming from the mouth — The visual of Fatu’s face after Reigns’ two Spears was one of the most striking images in recent PLE history. CBS Sports’ headline led with this detail.
No Carmelo Hayes — Despite being announced for the US title triple threat, Hayes was not part of the match. The bout reverted to Williams vs Zayn one-on-one.

What’s Next After WWE Backlash 2026?
The post-Backlash landscape sets up the next two months of WWE programming:
Cody Rhodes vs Gunther — Clash in Italy, May 31: The Undisputed WWE Championship match at the Inalpi Arena in Turin was confirmed on SmackDown May 8. Both men appeared at Backlash in a contract segment — look for the Clash in Italy build to accelerate on Monday’s Raw and Friday’s SmackDown.
Roman Reigns’ next challenger: Reigns retained against Fatu, but Zilla Fatu’s front-row appearance and Jacob’s refusal to shake hands mean the Bloodline story continues. CM Punk, who has been without a clear direction since losing the title at WrestleMania, is the other looming challenger.
The John Cena Classic: Date and venue TBA. This new event creates an entirely new content cycle — card announcements, NXT vs WWE matchups, and fan voting mechanics will generate weeks of coverage.
IYO SKY’s championship future: SKY’s victory over Asuka positions her as the next Women’s World Championship challenger against Liv Morgan on Raw.
Bron Breakker’s rise: Back-to-back PLE victories (Gunther assist at WrestleMania, clean win over Rollins at Backlash) make Breakker the most protected rising star in WWE.
