Why Lens Striker Odsonne Edouard Turned Down World Cup 2026 Squad Spot

Football

Odsonne Edouard has turned down the chance to represent Haiti at the FIFA World Cup 2026, despite being offered a guaranteed place in their squad for this summer’s tournament in the United States.

The Lens striker revealed that he declined the invitation out of respect for the players who fought through qualifying to earn Haiti their first World Cup berth in 52 years.

Odsonne Edouard Explains His Decision

Edouard, who is of Haitian descent but represented France at youth level, was approached by Haiti head coach Sébastien Migné to lead the line at the World Cup — three group-stage matches against Brazil, Morocco, and Scotland on the biggest stage in football.

But the 28-year-old was unmoved. “No, I didn’t feel legitimate playing in this World Cup because the players fought to qualify and I wasn’t going to show up at the last minute to take advantage of this World Cup,” Edouard said. “If I’m going to play in it, I have to earn it.”

It is a stance that cuts against the grain of modern international football, where allegiance-switching ahead of major tournaments has become routine.

Haiti Squad for World Cup 2026: Who Made the Cut?

Haiti announced their 26-man squad for the tournament last week, becoming the first team in Group C to officially confirm their selections. Coach Migné stayed loyal to the core group that steered Les Grenadiers through qualifying, with the roster drawn almost entirely from the diaspora — players plying their trade across Europe, North America, and beyond. Only one player from Haiti’s domestic league made the final cut.

The squad features Premier League talent in Sunderland forward Wilson Isidor and Wolves midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, while veteran goalkeeper Johny Placide captains the side. Isidor, who enjoyed a productive campaign with the Black Cats, is expected to shoulder the attacking burden in Edouard’s absence.

Haiti open their World Cup campaign against Scotland on June 13 in Boston, before facing five-time champions Brazil in Philadelphia on June 19 and rounding out the group against African champions Morocco in Atlanta on June 24.

A Remarkable Season at Lens

Edouard’s decision carries extra weight given the form he has shown this season. The former Celtic and Crystal Palace forward has scored 14 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions for Lens, playing a central role in the club’s finest campaign in decades.

Just days before this story broke, Edouard scored in Lens’s historic 3-1 victory over Nice in the Coupe de France final — the club’s first-ever French Cup triumph in 120 years of existence. He also helped Lens finish second in Ligue 1 and secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Those numbers would have made him Haiti’s most dangerous attacking weapon at the World Cup.

Does Edouard Still Dream of France?

There is another layer to the decision. Accepting a Haiti call-up would have permanently tied Edouard’s international future to Les Grenadiers, closing the door on any possibility of a senior France cap. Having starred for Les Bleus at Under-21 level, the striker has not entirely abandoned that ambition.

Whether the call ever comes remains uncertain. But at 28, with a Coupe de France winners’ medal and Champions League football ahead of him, Edouard’s stock has never been higher. His choice to turn down a World Cup place — rather than parachute into a squad he did not help build — only adds to his reputation.
