Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand after being diagnosed with a side strain.

The Washington Sundar injury came during the first ODI at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara on January 11, where Washington reported acute discomfort in his lower rib area while bowling.

Following scans and an in-person consultation with a medical expert, Washington was advised rest for a few days. He will subsequently report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) for further management of his injury. The team management has opted not to risk the all-rounder ahead of the T20 World Cup build-up.

Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi Return To India T20I Squad

The India selectors have named Ravi Bishnoi as Washington’s replacement in the T20I squad. Bishnoi adds a specialist spin option to the side as India reshuffle their bowling resources for the five-match series.

In another change, Shreyas Iyer has been added to the T20I squad for the first three matches as cover for the injured Tilak Varma, who is unavailable after undergoing surgery for a groin injury.

India’s updated T20I squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Rinku Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Shreyas Iyer (first three T20Is), Ravi Bishnoi.

The series will serve as a key preparatory phase as India continue to fine-tune combinations ahead of the T20 World Cup.
