Why is Haris Rauf not playing T20 World Cup 2026? It’s a question many fans are asking after Pakistan announced their squad, especially given Rauf’s recent form and his long-standing role as the team’s strike fast bowler.

The short answer is simple: Haris Rauf has not been dropped due to injury or loss of form. His absence from the Pakistan T20 World Cup squad is the result of a selection and conditions-based decision, not a performance-related one.

Why is Haris Rauf not playing T20 World Cup 2026?

Pakistan’s selectors have opted to go into the tournament with only three specialist fast bowlers, prioritising balance and adaptability for Sri Lankan conditions. As a result, Haris Rauf misses out despite being one of Pakistan’s most experienced and successful T20I bowlers. Rauf last played for Pakistan in T20Is in the Asia Cup 2025 final against India.

This makes the decision surprising at first glance, but the explanation lies in squad composition rather than individual merit.

“When we decided to only take three seamers in Sri Lanka, there were obviously going to be some key seamers,” Pakistan white-ball coach Mike Hesson said.

“Wasim Jr, Ahmed Daniyal and Haris Rauf were certainly considered, but unfortunately there’s no spot. The three that are going — Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah and Salman Mirza — can all bowl in all three phases of the game, which is really important when you’re potentially going to play two in Sri Lanka.”

“In previous World Cups and previously, we have always taken an extra seamer there because conditions have dictated that, whereas in this situation we haven’t gone down that path. We have only picked three frontline seamers, with Faheem Ashraf as the all-rounder if we decide to play three, so that was pretty straightforward, and some very good players missed out,” he added.

Is Haris Rauf injured?

No. Haris Rauf is not injured and is fully fit.

In fact, he is currently in strong rhythm, having been one of the standout performers in franchise cricket over the last few months. In BBL 2025-26, Rauf finished with 20 wickets for Melbourne Stars, the most by any bowler in the season. There is no fitness concern behind his omission.

How Conditions Influenced Pakistan Squad For T20 World Cup 2026

All of Pakistan’s group matches are scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka, where pitches are traditionally slower and place a greater emphasis on spin bowling, all-rounders and seamers who can operate effectively across powerplay, middle overs and death.

This led selectors to strengthen their spin resources and limit the number of specialist fast bowlers, a key reason why Haris Rauf was omitted from Pakistan squad for T20 World Cup 2026.

All signs point towards Haris Rauf’s exclusion not being a reflection of declining performance, but a tactical call tied to tournament conditions.

Will Haris Rauf play again for Pakistan?

Likely. This is not likely to be a long-term exclusion and does not signal the end of Haris Rauf’s T20I career. It is mostly a tournament-specific decision, shaped by conditions and squad balance.

If conditions or combinations change in future series, Rauf should remain very much in contention for Pakistan.
