Ayush Mhatre Replacement: 3 Players CSK Can Sign After He Is Ruled Out of IPL 2026

Cricket

The Ayush Mhatre replacement hunt is on after Chennai Super Kings confirmed their leading run-scorer has been ruled out of IPL 2026 with a left hamstring injury. The 18-year-old suffered the tear while batting against SRH in Hyderabad on April 18, clutching his hamstring after completing a sharp two. CSK’s official announcement confirmed a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks.

Who will replace Ayush Mhatre at CSK? The question is urgent — Mhatre was CSK’s top scorer with 201 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of 177.87, including two fifties. His exit comes on top of Khaleel Ahmed’s season-ending injury and Nathan Ellis being ruled out before the season even began. With MS Dhoni still recovering from a calf injury, CSK’s IPL 2026 playoff hopes are hanging by a thread at 4 points from 6 matches.

Batting coach Mike Hussey acknowledged the blow after the SRH match, saying Mhatre had been in really nice touch and would be a big loss — but that it was an exciting opportunity for someone else to step up.

UPDATE on April 23: Ayush Mhatre has been replaced by fast bowler Akash Madhwal as CSK strengthen bowling group. Check full list of players to play for Mumbai Indians and later CSK ft. Akash Madhwal.

Here are the three best Ayush Mhatre replacement options CSK can target.

1. Atharva Taide — The Left-Handed Top-Order Batter With Domestic Pedigree

Atharva Taide is the most natural like-for-like Ayush Mhatre replacement CSK can find in the available player pool.

The 25-year-old Vidarbha left-hander is a proven domestic performer with a strong List A record and has been on IPL radars for multiple seasons. He was part of Punjab Kings squad previously and understands the franchise environment. His strength lies in his clean hitting through the off side and ability to bat in the top three — exactly the slot Mhatre was filling.

Taide hasn’t quite established himself in T20 cricket as firmly as in List A formats, but his strokeplay is rated highly by scouts. He offers CSK a player who can walk straight into the top order without reshuffling the batting lineup. At 25, he’s also more mature than the teenage options, which could be valuable for a CSK side under pressure in the second half of the season.

Why he fits: Left-handed top-order batter, domestic experience, can slot into Mhatre’s No.3 position without disrupting the lineup.

2. Vihaan Malhotra — The Ashwin-Backed U19 Star CSK Could Loan From RCB

This is the wildcard option — and it has the backing of no less than Ravichandran Ashwin. The former CSK and India spinner publicly suggested that CSK should explore signing Vihaan Malhotra on loan from RCB, given that the U19 World Cup star has not featured in a single game for Bengaluru this season.

Malhotra, 19, was India’s standout all-rounder at the U19 World Cup 2026 — smashing an unbeaten 109 against Zimbabwe and taking 4/14 against Bangladesh. A left-handed batter and right-arm off-break bowler from Patiala, he was signed by RCB for ₹30 lakh at the auction but has been warming the bench behind Kohli, Salt, Padikkal, and Patidar.

Ashwin’s logic is sound: Malhotra isn’t playing for RCB, CSK desperately need a young top-order batter, and a loan deal would benefit all parties. However, IPL loan rules are complex and inter-franchise transfers mid-season require both teams’ agreement plus BCCI approval. Whether RCB would strengthen a rival remains doubtful — but the suggestion has generated significant buzz.

Why he fits: U19 World Cup pedigree, left-handed batter who bowls off-spin (offers all-round value), fits CSK’s youth-first 2026 strategy. The loan route is uncertain but the profile is perfect.

3. Anmolpreet Singh — The Experienced Domestic Option

If CSK want a straightforward, experienced replacement who can contribute immediately, Anmolpreet Singh is the safest pick.

The 27-year-old Punjab batter went unsold at the IPL 2026 mini-auction but has a proven domestic record. A right-handed batter with a solid technique and a good range of shots, Anmolpreet has been one of Punjab’s key batters in the domestic circuit. He is not quite the modern-day T20 dasher in Mhatre’s mould, but he brings stability and the ability to bat through an innings.

At his age, Anmolpreet would be a short-term fix rather than a long-term investment — but with CSK needing to win 6 of their remaining 8 matches to qualify for the playoffs, short-term fixes might be exactly what they need. He’s available immediately and would come at base price.

Why he fits: Available, experienced, stable top-order option. Won’t replicate Mhatre’s explosive strike rate but offers a safe pair of hands for a team in crisis.

Urvil Patel - who can replace Ayush Mhatre at CSK

What About Urvil Patel From Within the Squad?

CSK also have an internal option. Urvil Patel, the explosive wicketkeeper-batter, is already in the squad and could slot into the top three. He played three games last season, scoring 68 runs at a strike rate of 212.50. His fearless hitting mirrors Mhatre’s approach more closely than any external replacement could.

However, promoting Urvil would require reshuffling the batting order around Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad — a risky move mid-season. CSK may prefer to use Urvil as the internal solution for the playing XI while signing an external Ayush Mhatre replacement to cover squad depth.

CSK’s Growing Injury Crisis

Is Ayush Mhatre ruled out of IPL 2026? Yes — and he joins an alarming list of CSK casualties this season:

  • Nathan Ellis — ruled out before the season (hamstring)
  • Khaleel Ahmed — ruled out mid-season (quadricep tear)
  • Spencer Johnson — Ellis’s replacement, still not joined due to back stress fracture
  • MS Dhoni — yet to play (calf strain)
  • Ayush Mhatre — ruled out (hamstring tear, 6-12 weeks rehab)

CSK now have five key players either out or unavailable heading into the business end of the season. With 4 points from 6 matches and 8 games remaining, every squad decision from here directly impacts whether CSK can qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs.

The Ayush Mhatre replacement announcement is expected in the coming days. CSK play MI at the Wankhede on April 23 — and whoever comes in will need to hit the ground running.
