Why KKR Target Cameron Green Could Be A Shock CSK Buy At IPL 2026 Auction

Cricket

The biggest KKR target heading into the IPL 2026 auction is unquestionably Cameron Green. With Kolkata Knight Riders entering the event with the largest purse of INR 64.3 crore, much of the conversation has centred around Green being their marquee signing after releasing Andre Russell. But a closer look at the auction dynamics, purse distribution, squad structure, and the new maximum-fee rule suggests a surprising twist: Cameron Green could actually become a shock CSK buy, even though he is the most discussed KKR target player this season.

KKR Target Cameron Green Is Their Ideal Russell Replacement

For KKR, the logic behind targeting Green is obvious. Russell is gone, Glenn Maxwell is not in the registered list, and the franchise desperately needs a middle-order aggressor who can also offer three to four overs. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra even said Green would be an “upgraded version” of Russell, adding that KKR need Cameron Green because he fits both their batting and bowling gaps.

KKR auction strategy, however, is complicated by their squad composition. Despite having a massive purse, they also have:

  • A fragile top order
  • No established overseas opener
  • No elite wicketkeeper
  • A shallow domestic spin pool
  • A need for two frontline overseas pacers
  • The added requirement of a death-overs specialist (Pathirana being the top choice)

This means that while Cameron Green is the premier KKR target, they simply cannot afford to put 40–50% of their purse into one player when multiple holes must be plugged urgently.

Why CSK Buy for Green Is Not as Unrealistic as It Sounds

This is where Chennai Super Kings come in. At first glance, CSK are not expected to chase Green aggressively after all, their priorities are a Ravindra Jadeja replacement, one overseas hitter, and possibly a finishing all-rounder. But the difference between CSK and KKR lies in the number of slots they must fill.

CSK have far fewer positions open, a more settled core, and only nine slots remaining with a purse of INR 43.4 crore. That gives them freedom to stretch their budget on one premium player without breaking squad construction.

KKR target Cameron Green cannot earn more than INR 18 crore due to the maximum-fee rule for overseas players in mini auctions, but the bidding can go beyond that with the remaining amount going to BCCI. CSK, with fewer holes and more clarity in role allocation, can simply decide that if Green is a tactical disruptor, or if his signing destabilises KKR’s auction, they can afford to push the bid up.

CSK Target Players Are More Flexible Than KKR

While KKR are tied to specific high-cost roles, CSK target players include several affordable options:

  • Prashant Veer, the UP all-rounder expected to be Jadeja’s successor
  • Affordable finishing options
  • Multiple domestic spinners
  • Several role-based all-rounders emerging from trials

Because CSK already have batting solidity and a strong pace core. They don’t need Green, but they can buy Green.

The difference is massive. KKR need him as a core piece. CSK want him as a luxury, or a strategic blockade. This frees CSK to operate with calm aggression in the auction, whereas KKR must operate with pressure, specially as Green comes in the first set of 359 shortlisted players, where KKR don’t have other priorities sorted.

KKR Target Players Beyond Green: Major Budget Stress Awaiting Kolkata

Even if KKR secure Green, their remaining needs are immense:

  • A world-class death bowler — Pathirana will be expensive
  • An overseas opener — Jonny Bairstow or Jamie Smith could be expensive too
  • A backup fast bowler — Jason Holder or Matt Henry
  • A wicketkeeper option — either overseas or someone like Kartik Sharma
  • More domestic spin depth
  • A left-handed batting option

This is why going all-out for Green, even though he is the perfect KKR target, is risky.

KKR could end up with Green and Pathirana but little money left for essentials — the exact situation they faced in earlier seasons. Meanwhile, CSK target players are not dependent on overseas stars. Their pathways are clearer, cheaper, and allow more experimentation.

Why Cameron Green Might Actually Fit Better at CSK

CSK offer something KKR cannot: role clarity. Green can bat at No.4 or No.5 without being forced into a high-pressure enforcer role. He can bowl overs without being used as a frontline strike bowler. Teams tend to pay more comfortably for a buy who is an addition to squad, and more anxiously if they are a necessity, which often ends poorly.

Cameron Green Is Still Favourite for KKR, But CSK Can Hijack the Auction

When the hammer goes up on December 16, Cameron Green will be the defining player of KKR’s auction.
But because CSK have fewer slots, a more complete squad, tactical freedom, and enough purse to push KKR into uncomfortable territory, the possibility of Green wearing yellow instead of purple is more realistic than most fans believe. KKR target selection will decide their season, but CSK buy strategies could completely dictate how the bidding unfolds.

Green remains the top KKR target, but in this auction, control belongs to CSK, and that is what makes a shock move truly possible.
